Weekly Update (9/30-10/4)

This Week in Kindergarten…

Popcorn Words: to, you, do, green

We had a blast locating our popcorn words in our daily message this week!  The students were sight word detectives and located them in books and poems they were reading as well.

Class Reward:

We started a new reward system in our class!  When the students are demonstrating on task behavior, they earn a point.  If they are off task, Mrs. Tindall earns a point.  If the students end the day with more points than Mrs. Tindall, she chooses a child to pull a stick.  As soon as all of the marbles fall, a classroom reward is earned.  The reward may be a pajama day, bring a stuffed animal to school, watch a short book on video, etc…We are getting very close to earning our first reward!

Writers Workshop:

This week in writers workshop we were super excited to show and tell our item from home in our writing! The students pulled their object out of their brown bag, told their partner about it and then they were asked to draw and label it.  Labeling is tricky but we are learning to stretch words slowly and write all of the sounds that we hear.  Please check out some pictures from writing this week below:

Readers Workshop:

We are continuing on with our favorite stories in reading this week!  The students are learning to sound exactly like the characters in some of our favorites while they are reading their books!  They are also learning to use the picture when reading their book.

Private Reading:

Partner Reading:

We used this book to sound exactly like the characters in the, “Three Billy Goats Gruff”.  The students had a blast changing their voice to sound exactly like the troll and billy goats in this story.  This little paper book is now in their black book bin.

Math:

This week in math, we really focused on writing numbers 1-5.  We learned that writing a 5 can be a bit tricky!  The students are learning that 5 is a small down, curve and a slide at the top.  We are using Peterson’s Language when making our letters and numbers.  We also compared sets of numbers and drew objects for the number 4 and 5.  Next week, we will have our very first math test to assess the skills that we have learned.

Handwriting:

We absolutely LOVE using the white boards for handwriting! The kinders are now learning to write CVC words.  I will say the letter sounds and they will write the letter!  Together we will blend the letters to read the word.  This is a great way to practice our handwriting, letter identification, letter sounds and blending sounds to read words!  We will continue to practice this skill.

Mystery Reader:

Anna was so surprised to see her dad walk through the door as our Mystery Reader this week!  He read us the story “Ellie” by Mike Wu.  Through this story we learned that you do not have to be big to be a big help!  Ellie was just a little elephant and she saved the day through her creative flair and teamwork! Thank you Mr. Bragg for coming to visit us and be our Mystery Reader!

Fire Truck Visit:

We had so much fun today with our Fire Truck Visit!  In the morning we made fire trucks-they are now hanging on our classroom wall!  We also made Dalmatian fire hats and the kinders wore them when we met the firefighters!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

LIBRARY: We go to library every Friday and visit Mrs. VandenBurg. It is so much fun to go to library! Please remember to help your kinder return their library book every Friday so they can get a new one book!

BLUE FOLDERS:  Please get in the habit of taking out your kinder’s blue folder each night and removing the papers, art work, etc.  Please place any notes back inside the folder.  That is the best place for me to find them.  Thank you!

SNACKS:  Please remember to send 2 healthy snacks with your child every day.
