Popcorn Words: we, be, me, will and purple

We had a blast celebrating the color purple today!  The kinders learned the song, “It Was A One-Eyed Purple People Eater”!  We listened to this song a few times:) The kinders each made a One-Eyed Purple People Eater.  They are now hanging up in our classroom.  We also tried a purple snack today—purple grapes!  We ate this snack while we listened to the book, “Harold and the Purple Crayon”.  We are having so much fun celebrating different colors at the end of our busy week.  It’s a fun way to end each week.  Next, week we will be celebrating the colors black & white!

Writing:

On Monday,  we worked with our partner to make our writing even better!  We did this by asking our partner, “How can I make this even better?”  Later in the week we expanded our writing by writing a show and tell book.  We learned (once again) that we can write across pages and add many details to each page.  While doing this we are working on stretching our words to add labels and add sentences to our writing.

Reading:

This week in readers workshop we learned that one way to make our old favorite storybooks sound more grown-up is to read the words that make the pages go together.  You read one page and then put in connecting words like and then…and after that…and then you read the next page.  We had fun practicing this during private and partner reading!  We also practiced finding sight words we may know in our books and trying to sound exactly like the characters in our books!  At the end of the week we worked with our partners and used everything we have learned about storybook reading to make it the best that it can be!

Math:

On Monday, we finished our last lesson in Unit 1.  We learned about the differences between straight lines and curvy lines.  We also talked about shapes that have straight lines and curvy lines.  On Tuesday and Wednesday we reviewed for our Unit 1 test and on Thursday we took it!  The kinders did a wonderful job taking this test whole group.  Taking a test whole group requires us to really listen and follow directions.  We did a great job showing these skills off while we took our test.

Mystery Reader:

Jack was so excited to see his dad walk through the door today!  Jack’s dad read us Skippyjon Jones by Judy Schachner.  We learned that Skippyjon Jones is no ordinary cat!  We learned that he is a frisky kitty who wears a mask and cape and battles banditos! It was such a fun story and we were so glad Jack’s dad was able stop in and see us!
