Weekly Update (11/11-11/15)

Weekly Popcorn Words:

or, for

Veterans Day Activity:

On Monday, we celebrated Veterans day by talking about why we celebrate Veterans Day.  We learned this special day is to honor those brave men and women who have served our country in the past and who are currently serving our country.  We were able to learn about this important holiday through a scholastic reader.  After our scholastic reader we made a craft.

Writing:

This week in Writers Workshop we continued to write personal narratives.  On Monday, we thought of a new small moment story that took place in our lives and told it to our partner.  We also began to write it down.  On Tuesday, we continued on with our story by adding what happened next on the following page.  On Wednesday, we worked on the 3rd page in our story.  On Thursday, we decided if we wanted to start a new story or add on to our current story by adding another page!  The kinders are learning the importance of drawing a quality picture, labeling the picture and writing down a sentence to match the picture.  We have been working super hard in writing this week.

Reading:

This week in readers workshop we added some new powers to our chart!  We learned we can have partner power when we work with our partner.  When we work together we can double check our reading which then doubles our powers!  On Wednesday, we learned the meaning behind snap word power!  We learned that snap words/popcorn words, are words that we know really well and can read quickly!  So when we encounter them in a book, we can activate snap word power and read those words in a snap.  On Thursday, we activated our sound power.  This is when we get stuck on a word, we can activate sound power by looking at the first letter and saying the letter sound.  This may help us decode the word when reading.  We are having a blast using our super powers in reading!

Math:

This week in math we have been busy building numbers 1-10, comparing numbers 1-10 and writing numbers 1-10!  We also explored the +1 and -1 relationship with the numbers 1-10 by using a counting mat.  On Thursday, we wrapped up our week by exploring with hexagons.  We discussed the attributes of hexagons—the students learned that a hexagon has 6 sides and 6 corners/points.

Mystery Reader:

Addy was thrilled to see her mom walk through the door as our Mystery Reader on Thursday!  Mrs. Burns read us the book, “Thelma the Unicorn” by Aaron Blabey.  This book was super exciting for many of the kinders because they LOVE unicorns!  “Thelma the Unicorn” is about a unicorn who dreams of being a glamorous unicorn and her wish comes true!  She lives a super cool life but then realizes she used to be happier when she was her ordinary, sparkle free self.  This was such a sweet book and it had a great message, it is important to be just be you!!!!  Thanks for visiting us Mrs. Burns.

If you would like to be a Mystery Reader, please sign up under the volunteer tab to the right on our blog or if none of those times work for you, send me an email and we can find a time that works for you.

Weekly Star Student:

Meet Kennedy!

Kennedy was our star student this week!  We learned so many fun facts about Kennedy!  We learned that something special about her is she is the oldest and she has twin sisters!  We also learned that her favorite color is pink, she likes the book Rapunzel and her favorite sport is soccer!  When she is at school her favorite part of the day is play time and she loves to play with her friends at home.  Thanks for being our star student this week Kennedy!
