Weekly Update (9/6-9/10)

Popcorn Words: I, see, yellow

We had fun celebrating the color yellow this week.

Writers Workshop

This week in writers workshop we focused on learning that when writers have problems and do not know what to do they, solve the problem and do the best that they can!  We are continuing to learn that we do not waste precious time in writing, we continue to do our best and try, try and try!!!  The students are doing a wonderful job of putting this into practice and working the whole time during their writing workshop time. Each day at the end of our writing time we have the opportunity to share with a partner sitting near us and with the whole class!

Reading Workshop

This week in readers workshop we focused on what it means to private read and partner read.  On Wednesday, we learned where our private read spots were and the students picked one book to read while they were in that spot.  We are learning that we can read the pictures in the book and we need to start reading at the cover.  We then read page by page until we get to the end.  We are up to 5 minutes of private read time of everyone staying on task:) We also worked on partner reading with our partners and finding our partner reading spot. Their job this week was to teach their partner about the book that they had chosen!

Math

This week in math we worked on drawing scenes!  The students each drew a scene for the numbers 2, 3, and 4.  These went home in their folders.  We also practiced ordering, counting and visualizing the numbers 1-5 by using our counting mat!  This year we did this whole group and the kids did a nice job of being patient and taking turns with the math manipulative pieces.  Today the students enjoyed working on counting by placing play doh balls on a bus mat.  We did this all together and discussed the concept of adding one more to get the next number.

Handwriting

In handwriting we worked on writing the letters Ee, Ff, Gg and Hh and the numbers 1-5.  The students are practicing their handwriting by writing the letters/numbers in the air, on paper or on whiteboards!  We are really focused on taking our time to produce quality letters/numbers.

Library

We visited the library for the first time on Tuesday!   We took a tour of the library and learned where we can find books to check out!  At the very end of our time, we were able to check out one book.  These books are due back to school on Tuesday, September 14.

Birthday Celebrations

We had a blast celebrating Ellie’s birthday this week!  She turned six on Wednesday:)

Important Information

  • Send your child’s blue folder back and forth to school each day.
  • Please remember to send TWO healthy snacks for your child.  Please insure these snacks are NOT placed in a lunch box. Instead place them in container or baggy in your child’s backpack.  Show your child where these snacks are located and please make sure they are snacks your child likes to eat:) This will help to lessen confusion when ordering hot lunches each morning.
  • If you would like your child to receive milk with their cold lunch—please attach a note to the outside of their lunch box.  This will help make the milk ordering smoother each day:)
  • Please send your child’s blanket/towel and cuddle buddy back to school on Monday–they went home on Friday so they could be washed over the weekend.
