Weekly Update (9/13-9/17)

Popcorn Words: the, dog, blue

Writers Workshop:

This week in kindergarten we started our writing time by talking about how sometimes our tasks as writers can feel really hard, we might even think about giving up.  However, we decided that we don’t want to give up, we want to copy the “Little Engine That Could” character.  Reminding ourselves when something gets hard we should say, “I think I can, I think I can, I think I can.”  The kinders worked hard on writing all they knew about the playground.  They picked three things about the playground early in the week and wrote about them across three pages! The kindergartners did a great job working each day on adding labels, details and even trying to add a sentence to their writing by the end of the week! Our jobs as writers are getting tough but we are having a blast learning how to stretch words, and doing the best that we can!

Readers Workshop:

This week in readers workshop we worked on reading books over and over.  We learned that when we read a book over and over we learn new things about it!  One thing we learned is that pages of a book go together.  We also learned that when you reread a text you are able to rethink the book and this can take you beyond the book!  We had fun reading nonfiction text alone and with our partners this week.

Math:

This week in math the kindergartners talked about adding and subtracting.  We practiced these concepts by using our “math tools.”  They used these tools to also compare numbers.  We also practiced drawing 2, 3, 4, and 5 items and counting 1-5 objects.  We also explored the attributes of circles, they have no corners, no straight lines, but can be different sizes.

Constitution Day-September 17th

We celebrated Constitution Day this morning. The kinders learned that the Constitution is like the rules that we have for school. We also made an American Flag crown which many of the kiddos loved wearing throughout the morning!

Important Information

  • Send your child’s blue folder back and forth to school each day.
  • Please remember to send TWO healthy snacks for your child.  Please insure these snacks are NOT placed in a lunch box. Instead place them in container or baggy in your child’s backpack.  Show your child where these snacks are located and please make sure they are snacks your child likes to eat:) This will help to lessen confusion when ordering hot lunches each morning.
  • If you would like your child to receive milk with their cold lunch—please attach a note to the outside of their lunch box.  This will help make the milk ordering smoother each day:)
  • Please send your child’s blanket/towel and cuddle buddy back to school on Monday–they went home on Thursday so they could be washed over the weekend.
  • Hot lunch is now FREE for ALL students until June 2022.
