Readers Workshop:

This week in Reader’s Workshop we discussed how informational books are often filled with various text features!  We studied the book Dragonflies and together located many text features that stood out to us.  Some of these text features were labels, bold words, the glossary, table of contents and index in the book.  It was our job to find the text features in our nonfiction books during private read time and then share those features with our partner during partner read time.  We also looked closely at vocabulary words that are located throughout nonfiction books and used the book “Zoo Looking” by Mem Fox to make a list of vocabulary words that popped up on the book.  We had fun reading nonfiction text this week!

This week in math we worked on identifying all of the partners for numbers 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9 and 10.  On Monday we wrote our numbers 1-100!  This was a big task, but we all tried our best and rocked it!  We also viewed teen numbers as ten ones and extra ones and practiced finding 10-partners.  On Wednesday, we solved addition and subtraction stories and visualized those teen numbers as ten ones and extra ones.  Later in the week we compared numbers using the equal and not equals signs.

Friday Fun:

We had an egg hunt today out on the playground!  The kids had so much fun looking for four eggs with their name on them.  This activity kept us busy for a little bit while we searched!  We came back in the classroom to enjoy one little candy from our eggs.

We also discussed our 5 senses today! The kids learned that our 5 senses consist of taste, sound, smell, touch and seeing!  We tested our 5 senses with a peep marshmallow treat!  We discussed what senses we can use with them.  We decided they make no sound, they feel a little squishy and rough, they taste sweet, they look like little yellow chicks, and they do not have much of a smell.

Readers Workshop:

We started a new unit in Readers Workshop this week!  This unit is called the If/Then Unit.  This unit is our last unit in reading and it will stretch from April into May.  We started our lessons off by becoming experts on topics by reading books, asking questions and talking with others.  We did this by focusing on strategies to help us with comprehending nonfiction text.  On Monday we asked ourselves key details about our nonfiction books-Who?, What? When?, Where, How?, Why?.  We continued to use these questions throughout the week to dig deeper into our nonfiction text by looking and asking questions as we read.

Math:

This week we started our last unit in math!  To kick off the new unit the students worked on addition/subtraction stories and visualized teen numbers as a ten group and ones! On Tuesday the kinders drew teen scenes. The students picked a shape/picture and a teen number.  Then they drew a ten group and ones to represent that number.

We also had the opportunity to focus on partners of 10!  We are counting stars to make partners of 10 and writing the corresponding equation.
