Writing

This week in Writers Workshop we continued to write personal narratives.  On Monday, we thought of a new small moment story that took place in our lives and told it to our partner.  We also began to write it down.  On Wednesday, we continued on with our story by adding what happened next on the following page.  On Thursday, we worked on the 3rd page in our story.  We are continuing to learn the importance of drawing a quality picture, labeling the picture and writing down a sentence to match the picture. I am super impressed with how hard these sweet kinders have been working in writing.

Reading

We continued on with our super powers unit in reading!  We added a few more super powers to our chart.  The newest super power we learned this week is persistence power.  We learned that we need to be like the “Little Engine that Could” and continue to try different super powers and not give up if we come to a tricky part in the book we are reading.  On Wednesday, we focused on what it means to be a smooth reader.  We learned that we can really bring our books come to life when we read smoothly, just like how grown-ups read books to us!  We are really taking off with reading this year in the classroom and at home with our take home books!  Thank you for all of your support as we continue to grow as readers in kindergarten!

Word Study

This week in word study we practiced stretching words by saying them slowly, creating sound bars for every sound we hear and writing the word down on the sound bars.  We have also been listening for certain sounds and discussing if that sound is in a given word and if it is, is it in the beginning, middle or end.  On Thursday, we had a special guest come and teach our word study lesson!  Nora Chahbazi the founder of EBLI(the program we use for word study) came to teach us a lesson.  This was great for Mrs. Tindall to see some of her techniques and see how she teaches the lessons from the beginning all the way to the end.  This was a great learning opportunity for both the students and Mrs. Tindall!

Math

This week in math we wrapped up Unit 2.  On Monday the kinders really worked hard on perfecting their 8s and 9s when they are writing, they also practiced writing numbers 1-10.  On Wednesday, we reviewed for our math test and on Thursday we took our math test!  The graded tests went home with your kinder on Friday.  We will start Unit 3 after Thanksgiving break.

Mystery Readers

This week our mystery readers were Mason’s parents!  Mr. and Mrs. Giffin surprised us and read us the book Tiny T. Rex and the Impossible Hug by Jonathan Stutzman.  This story was about a sweet little T-Rex who is the smallest in his family and he has a hard time giving hugs because his super small arms.  In this story Tiny learns about caring and the positives of independent, creative thinking to achieve the impossible!  Mason was so EXCITED to have both parents as our Mystery Reader!  Thanks for taking the time out of your Friday Mr. and Mrs. Giffin to surprise us:) We had a blast.
