Fast Friday Fun

We wrapped up our week together by having a little fun with turkey’s on this fast Friday.  We started off our day by reading a Thanksgiving book and making turkeys.  The turkeys are now hanging up on a bulletin board in our hallway for all to enjoy.  These will go home at the end of next week, so you can all see them before the Thanksgiving holiday.  We ended our fast Friday with a social studies lesson on wants and needs.  We learned what is a need and what is a want.

Writing

This week in Writers Workshop we continued to write personal narratives.  On Monday, we thought of a new small moment story that took place in our lives and told it to our partner.  We also began to write it down.  On Tuesday, we continued on with our story by adding what happened next on the following page.  On Wednesday, we worked on the 3rd page in our story.  On Thursday, we added extra details and fancied it up with color. We are continuing to learn the importance of drawing a quality picture, labeling the picture and writing down a sentence to match the picture. I am super impressed with how hard these sweet kinders have been working in writing.  Please check out some pictures below:

Reading

On Monday, we kicked off readers workshop by learning about partner power!  We learned that we can make our reading even stronger by using partner power.  During partner power, one person reads, and the other partner points to each word.  Both partners can check that one word needs one point.  We learned by doing this, we are doubling our partner power!  On Tuesday, we learned about picture power.  This is when we use the picture to help us read a word we may not know.  Later in the week, we added in snap word power. We activate snap word power by read the words we know in a snap!  Our weekly sight words are now turning into snap words for us.  Please keep practicing them at home. It is awesome to see the kinders use these power to help them solve tricky words they are not sure of when reading!  Check out some pictures of the kinders reading this week.

Veteran’s Day

We celebrated Veteran’s Day on Wednesday.  We read a Scholastic Magazine on the holiday and learned more about what makes someone a veteran and why it is so important to honor these brave men and women on this holiday.

Star Student

Meet Kade

This week, Kade was our star student!  We learned that his favorite color is green and he loves all things about frogs!  He told us that one of his favorite activities at home is to catch frogs in his pond.  On Thursday, he brought in a frog book for all of us to look at.  We had fun flipping though the pages and learning frog facts.  A super cool fact about Kade is he loves to visit the Upper Peninsula and he even has family that lives there!  He said he enjoys visiting them for holidays and during the summer.  We feel super blessed to have Kade in our classroom this year.  Thank you Kade for being an amazing star student this week. It was so much fun to learn more about you!

A Couple of Reminders…

  • It was just announced today, through a district email, that Nov. 23 and 24 are now remote learning days for Hudsonville Public Schools.  I will be sending home a learning packet with your kinder next week for each of these days.  This packet must be completed over these days and returned to school the following week.
  • Conferences are next week Monday and Tuesday from 4-7:30pm.  I will be sending home a conference packet with your child on Monday.  Please look for this packet and have it readily available for our conference time.  I am looking forward to meeting with each of you through Zoom!
  • Our annual PE C.A.R.E.S food drive continues into next week!  We are asking for your help by bringing in non-perishable food items for Love Inc. in Hudsonville.  Food items to consider are canned vegetables and fruits, pasta, rice, baked beans, black beans, kidney beans, peanut butter, tuna fish, etc. (please no ramen noodles, and please do not break apart packaged food).  The food drive will continue until Nov. 18.
  • Towels went home on Thursday, please return them to school clean and washed for Monday.
